Numbers game!

The truth about Tamil statistics
Toronto Star, Apr 04, 2009 09:26 AM, KATHY ENGLISH

When a human chain of Tamil Canadian protesters circled Toronto's city core last month, the Star reported the "fact" that Greater Toronto is home to 200,000 Tamils, the largest Sri Lankan Tamil community outside Sri Lanka.

Is that number in fact correct? Short of lining up and counting every Tamil in Toronto, the Star can't determine exactly how many have come from Sri Lanka to make the GTA home. The best we can do is provide readers with a fair approximation from authoritative sources.

In a city that's now home to a multitude of ethnic populations, who keeps count of the diverse numbers in the GTA? In reporting complex population statistics, who should journalists look to for the best sources of accurate data?

  1. Bravo, bravo! Someone has done their research!

When LTTE goons talk about Tamils, they take all the Indian Tamils also into account as Tamils. However, most of the Indian Tamils do not give a f&ck about LTTE.

Inflating figures is a long mastered art by LTTE. When the politicians see such inflated numbers, they start salivating for voter base, and do whatever that LTTE asks them to do.

It is great that this was probed by Toronto Star! Good for you!

  2. Yes, I must say Toronto Star for once had an article that was not pro LTTE. Then again they might be lowering the numbers, trying to help the Liberals, who are accused of vote hunting.

I hear that the reason for the inflated numbers in Vanni, is because during the peace talk era (when Norwegians were there), SL government had continued to supply food, medical supply etc for the Vanni citizens. In order to get more rations for their cadres, LTTE had inflated the number of people living there. Government knew about this scheme by LTTE, but INGOs who were also aware of those number at the time, still thinks goes by those numbers and think they are correct... Talk about NOT doing their research... LOL!

  3. This is a fine example of Tamil exaggeration to convince the world that numbers matter and scare people. Existence of a Tamil kingdom is also another fantasy to support Eelam. None of this has any impact on the battlefield where numbers count, on that Sri Lanka is winning handily.
