COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka on Wednesday deported a Canadian legislator it views as sympathetic to the Tamil Tiger separatists, the latest foreign official it has sent out of the country at the end of a 25-year war.

Bob Rae, a Liberal party legislator, said Sri Lanka's government had reached "ill-conceived and defamatory conclusions about me," and said his record showed he had spoken out against the Tigers during his prior involvement in the peace process.

Rea was stopped at Sri Lanka's international airport, said C.B. Abeykoon, controller of immigration and emigration.

"We got some intelligence reports on this gentleman and the instructions were not to allow him into the country, so he is detained at the airport and he will be deported by the next available flight," Abeykoon told Reuters.

  1. There is nothing "ill-concieved" about the actions of the Sri Lankan Govt. I am amazed that this man has had the nerve to think he would be welcome in Sri Lanka when he has spent so much time slandering the govt. of Sri Lanka and parroting the foolish claims of "ethnic-cleansing" by his terrorist-supporting constituents. This pawn of the LTTE supporters, while leader of the NDP funelled millions of dollars into the LTTE coffers to fight their terrorist war against Sri Lanka. He has now switched to the Liberals who were also bigtime financial supporters of the LTTE. Their leader Paul Martin once appeared at a fund-raising dinner for the Tigers.

  3. I heard that Bob Rae is stuck inside a phone-booth somewhere in Sri Lanka still trying to get out of his Super-man outfit. Hey Bob, try to lose a few pounds next time before you take off on a mission to save the world.

  4. Wonder what BOB was expecting... A red carpet welcome for his support for a terrorist organization. Rumblings are that he was presented to Sri Lanka (apparently by our own diplomats here in Canada) as a "cabinet minister"...? Unless he is a carpenter working on Cabinets, that was a blatant lie! So good for him! Well done GOSL! Now if only the Canadian authorities smarten up and stop this terrorist sympathizer from entering Canada, that would be ideal!

  5. Bob Rae is the poster child for democracy gone wrong.

Western bleeding hearts facilitate terrorism in other people's backyards thinking that they are carrying the humanity's burden on their white shoulders.

Why would he be allowed to go to Sri Lanka when Canada will instantly deport anyone vocally supporting Al Qaeda?

Canada is an amazingly tolerant country, but we will all pay the price for its short sighted foreign policy

Government needs to separate the vocal extremists from genuine democratic voices.

  6. Read this comment Bob Rae on his website. Looks like his trusted information source is the BBC!

First thing in the morning these days I find the BBC website on my blackberry to find the latest on the tragic events in Sri Lanka.

No wonder he is so confused about Sri Lanka.

BBC was simply echoing TamilNet for the past 10 years.

We should certainly pay more attention to BBC's role in this conflict.
